Chomsky

"There are many specific factors that must be considered in a detailed examination of particular decisions, such as those that led us ever more deeply into Indochina. Nevertheless, it seems reasonably clear that American policy, like that of any great power, is guided by the "national interest" as conceived by dominant social groups, in this case, the primary goal of maximizing the free access by American capital to the markets and human and material resources of the world, the goal of maintaining to the fullest possible extent its freedom of operation in a global economy. At the same time, ideologists labor to mask these endeavors in a functional system of beliefs." -Noam Chomsky, "For Reasons of State" (1973)

Why is it so inconceivable for people to actually have the right to govern themselves? Why is it, that we, as individuals or groups of individuals don't have the right to voice our political opinion against that of the government's and then actually make a change to that government? The US was established via guerilla subversion. The US gained independence against an imperialist nation that forced upon it policies that the Patriots didn't believe in. They fought and they won. They were able to establish themselves and gain recognition as a nation in the world. How is it, that here we are almost two-hundred and fifty years later and the US has stepped back in time to become the very thing our ancestors fought against? Now, how many patriots have we murdered? How many rightful uprisings have we quashed? How many voices have we silenced? When will we finally be held accountable for our barbarous and outdated actions?
